August member spotlight Charlie Goodman specialises in employee benefits and financial wellbeing.
About Charlie
Charlie helps other HR consultants and employers develop, deliver and review employee benefits. Charlie likes being able to help people from different backgrounds feel better about their financial security and wellbeing rather than just wealthy individuals.
How long have you been a member of HRi?
Since the very beginning, so I’m guessing nearly two years now.
Why did you join HRi?
I’d set up my own benefits, reward, and wellbeing consultancy and I was looking for support and to network with other independent HR consultants. I enjoyed being part of the HRi Facebook group and it was a no-brainer to join the new membership scheme. The offer of ongoing support, regular events, and opportunities to promote my business was valuable.
What’s your favourite part of being a member of HRi?
The network – the other members are really supportive and great fun. It’s also good to be surrounded by people in the same and similar boats as you.
What is your specialism?
Employee Benefits and Financial Wellbeing. I’ve helped organisations from start-ups to multinational corporates. As a former financial adviser and money coach, I love running our financial wellbeing workshops.
What do you love most about HR? and being independent?
I like being able to help lots of people from different backgrounds feel better about their financial security and wellbeing rather than just wealthy individuals which I had done as an adviser. Working with organisations in this capacity gives me that opportunity. I’ve helped organisations save money and engage their employees.
Being independent means I’m able to run a consultancy business that follows my values and allows me to operate in the way I want and innovate without needing permission. I also feel a lot more motivated and a lot happier.
How do you define success?
Learning from my failures and mistakes and moving forward positively.
What is your most memorable win, achievement or celebration?
Setting up my own business. I wish I had believed in myself and taken the opportunity to do so a long time ago.
Fun Facts
What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?
I hold the record for worst score in Foot Golf on the Edinburgh Foot Golf course. My dream of playing Foot Golf for England may be over, but Frisbee Golf? Watch this space.
Are you currently binge-watching any shows?
I’ve recently discovered the epic and captivating For All Mankind on Apple TV and have definitely binge-watched that. I’m also enjoying the last season of Better Call Saul.
If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I’d probably say a good steak and a bottle of Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. But I’m not sure my life would be very long if I ate that every day!
What’s one item you can’t live without?
Spotify – I need music in my life and it’s an almost infinite library. I wish it had been around when I was younger and I’m glad I’m able to listen along freely during the working day.
