This month HRi shines its member spotlight on Anabela Yourell.  No situation is a surprise for Anabela because she has seen it all as a seasoned ER specialist.

Anabela likes to work with businesses that have ambitious growth plans, managing the culture shifts and enabling the required conversations to positively move employees on as they outgrow their skillsets or develop into new roles.

How long have you been a member of HRi?
Since its launch.

 

Why did you join HRi?
Because it’s aimed at independents.

 

What’s your favourite part of being a member of HRi?
Lots of resources I can use, learning opportunities through the webinars, the helpdesk.

 

What is your specialism?
HR for businesses of up to around 15 employees, getting the foundations in from the beginning.

 

What do you love most about HR? and being independent?
Being an independent gives me the flexibility to work when I want with the clients I want. The variety of work I do is far greater than what I was limited to in terms of exposure when I was employed. I love educating my clients so they understand how they can draw out the best in their people.

 

How do you define success?
For me, success is knowing I’ve made a difference to a person or their business. I love to add value in some way (not always HR).

 

What is your most memorable win, achievement, or celebration?
Professional – In my 20+ HR career, I have negotiated over £750,000 worth of settlements for friends, families and ex-work colleagues, helping others is what I do!

Personal – Losing 5.5 stones (30+kgs) in 2019.

 

Fun Facts

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?
Despite being born in the UK, I didn’t speak English until I started school as my parents are Portuguese. I am fluent in Portuguese and got an A at GCSE and A-Level.

In 2001, I started a computer science degree at Kings College University and quit in my second year. I then did a Postgraduate Diploma in HRM and qualified in 2005 as a mature student.

 

Are you currently binge-watching any shows?
Queen of the South, NCIS, Pickard.

 

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I’d rather starve than have to choose one thing! lol.

 

What’s one item you can’t live without?
My trainers.
